The 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in New Delhi were meant to show how important India is becoming. They were part of one of the biggest money scams in the country.
Large-scale scandal
The theft of Rs. 70,000 crores in the Commonwealth scam shocked the country and put a shadow over sports administration. It is said that the money given to Indian athletes was stolen, putting them in terrible situations and hurting India’s image around the world.
Sporty people have to live in the dirt.
Indian players had to move from government-provided housing to run-down flats because of the Commonwealth scam, which wasted money. An foreign team that came to visit was shocked by the conditions. They found dog paw prints on the sheets and poop in the living rooms. India’s international image was hurt by the Commonwealth scam’s bad management, which also showed how widespread corruption and carelessness are.
Abuse workers and break people’s rights
This event showed how badly workers were treated. The OC broke the 1948 Minimum Wages Act by paying skilled workers 120–130 rupees a day and untrained workers 80–100 rupees a day, even though the working conditions were terrible. Seventy building workers died because kids were working in dangerous places. People get hurt by bad management.
A lot of anger in the people and in politics
It all began with Suresh Kalmadi, who organised the CWG and is a member of the Indian National Congress. People didn’t like Kalmadi because he lied, cheated, and wasted state money. Millions of poor people are angry that the government lost 70,000 crores on a sports event. It was called a national shame by some.
Battles in court and scams
The hearing for Kalmadi and the other cops was short but rough. The Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act were used to charge Kalmadi. He was sent to jail and spent ten months there. He was not allowed to go to the 2012 Olympics in London because the Delhi High Court thought he would make India look bad. It got worse when he said he had dementia while being questioned. Doctors weren’t sure what was wrong with him.
A happy finish to a sad part?
It was clear from the CWG incident that lying and bad management can hurt national pride and accomplishments. Our pasts can teach us how to be honest and do what we need to do. India is getting ready to play more games with other countries. The country should have players who are honest and healthy.
