During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, chaos broke out, and members of the opposition staged a dramatic walkout. Prime Minister Modi and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar both harshly criticized the walkout, which took place in the midst of boisterous protests.
During his speech, Prime Minister Modi berated the opposition for not wanting to hear the facts. “The nation is observing that people who disseminate false information lack the capacity to discern the truth. They lack the bravery to hear the responses to the queries they posed. Amid the confusion, Prime Minister Modi said, “They are insulting the Upper House and its glorious tradition.”
The opposition’s accusation that Mallikarjun Kharge, their leader in the Upper House, was denied the right to speak set off the walkout. PM Modi continued his speech, addressing a number of national concerns and emphasizing his government’s commitment to ending poverty, in spite of the demonstrations and cries of “LoP, LoP” (Leader of Opposition).
The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Jagdeep Dhankar, indicated his dissatisfaction with the Opposition’s actions by saying, “The Leader of the Opposition was afforded sufficient time to speak without any disruptions.” They departed from the House today, but they also left dignity behind. They presented it to the Indian Constitution instead of their back. They disregarded the oath they swore to uphold the Constitution. There is no greater affront to the Indian Constitution than this. I’m hoping they’ll examine themselves and do the right thing.”
Subsequently, Congress leader Kharge clarified that the Prime Minister’s “false statements” during his speech were the cause of the walkout. Kharge asserted that he was denied the opportunity to make his argument.
PM Modi also highlighted the accomplishments of his administration over the previous ten years and his vision for India during his speech. He claimed that the results of the general election in 2024 showed that Indian voters had rejected propaganda and cast their ballots based on merit.
This event happened after Speaker Om Birla reprimanded Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in response to similar disturbance on Tuesday during PM Modi’s speech in the Lok Sabha, which was met with protests.
The political battle has escalated as a result of the walkout, with both sides accusing the other of causing disruption and a lack of decorum during the legislative sessions. The episode highlights how deeply divided and tense things have become in Indian politics.
